Lui Shtini
Albanian, born 1978

Shtini spent three years working on this body of work, which he refers to as portraits. Although extremely abstract and surrealist in appearance, these paintings do reference classic portraiture principles in terms of size and composition. Working with oil paint on wooden blocks, Shtini meticulously applies layer upon layer to these works to achieve an almost hairy appearance. His technique defies the medium, as the final product appears bristling and alive with texture.
