Peter Wachtler
German, born 1979

Wächtler simultaneously appropriates the style and medium of classic cartoons, with its visual quality and use of animal characters, and subverts it through the use of repetitive imagery and noncomedic dialogue. In this video a slumped, dejected rat walks across a static background to a bed, where he lies down until the sun rises and he rises to retraces his steps across the room. This same sequence repeats with almost no variation. To accompany this reoccurring segment is a voice that lists brief anecdotes all beginning with the words “How I...”.
