Jean Katambayi Mukendi
Democratic Republic of Congo, born 1974

Made during the lockdown in the artist’s home city of Lubumbashi, each work is a diagrammatic depiction of a chimerical light bulb, exactingly rendered in black ballpoint pen on gridded paper with the assistance of a ruler and a compass. An electrical engineer by training, Mukendi illustrated the filaments and wires to symbolize the raw materials unearthed in Lubumbashi. A hub for some of the world’s largest copper and cobalt interests, the city serves as the Democratic Republic of Congo’s mining capital.
