Danh Vo
Vietnamese, 1975

The work is part of an ongoing project of 27 unique pieces. Each piece is made with gold leaf on an unfolded cardboard box that is used for shipping consumer goods, mostly American, that the artist found in Thailand. The gold leaf is done by a craftsperson in Thailand specialized in gilding temple ornamentations. The gold leaf depicts the stars and stripes of the U.S. flag, but with 13 stars and stripes, reflecting the number of the founder States in 1777. The 27 pieces that this group of works will ultimately consist of derives from the changes that have been made to the flag since then.
