This work is part of a project initiated by Zaatari called the Arab Image Foundation, a nonprofit established in Beirut in 1997. It locates, collects, preserves, and studies photographs from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Arab diaspora. This particular set, from the archives of Hashem el Madani, explores photography’s ties to urban spaces, particularly in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, when lightweight cameras enabled itinerant photographers to offer their services to people in the place of promenade.
