Brazilian (b. 1967)
The series comes from the idea that the artist cuts small circles from the pages of a new Portuguese translation of the Arabian nights stories, One Thousand and One Nights. This book contains hundreds of stories from the book and she has made one collage from the pages of each story. She scatters these small paper circles, each featuring fragments of text, across a sheet of black construction paper. The resulting composition is reminiscent of a starry night sky. The work makes reference to the abstraction of language, the mystery and mythology of the night sky, as well as the artist’s embrace of chance and contingency in the production process.
